Custom Shadow Box Framing in Memphis

Some Memories Deserve More Than a Flat Frame

A jersey folded in a closet. Your grandfather's medals in a drawer. The baby shoes nobody can bring themselves to throw away.

None of it fits behind glass in a standard frame. A shadow box gives those objects room to sit in: real depth, secure mounting, and a case built around the shape of what you're keeping.

Frame Corner has been building them in Memphis since 1975. Shadowbox framing is one of our specialties, and every one is made to order.

What a Shadow Box Actually Does

A standard frame presses everything flat against the glass. That works for a print. It does not work for a medal, a record sleeve, or a pair of shoes.

Shadow boxes are designed to encase items in a protective display while showcasing their depth. The glass sits forward, the object sits back, and the space between the two is what makes the whole thing work.

That space is engineered, not accidental. Deeper boxes allow for bulkier items and layered arrangements. Shallower ones suit patches and thinner pieces. We work out the depth with you during the design consultation, which costs nothing.

Military Medals, Ribbons and Service Keepsakes

Medals, ribbons, patches, insignia and service photos can be built into a single display. Uniforms too. With extra depth and custom mounting, we can frame anything from a vintage military uniform down to a single ribbon or patch.

A few things we work through with you on a military shadow box:

  • Layout. Bring what you have and we'll design the arrangement with you. Every project starts with a conversation.
  • Mounting. We anchor pieces mechanically rather than gluing them, so nothing sticks to or stains the surface.
  • Backing. Custom mats and backing fabrics in felt, linen or suede give the metal something to read against.
  • Engraved plates. Names, dates, or a short message can be added.

If you're working to a date, tell us when you come in. Most custom pieces take 10 full business days.

Jerseys and Sports Memorabilia

Jerseys, medals, race bibs, trophies, baseball card collections and ticket stubs are all memorabilia framing we do.

A jersey needs extra depth and custom mounting to sit properly. We build the box around the piece, using mounting that secures it without adhesives that can harm the fabric.

Vinyl, Concert and Music Memorabilia

Vinyl records, album artwork, signed album covers and concert ticket stubs frame well together. Layered mats or spacers add visual depth when several pieces go into one box.

Baby Shoes and Family Firsts

Baby shoes and hospital bracelets are classic shadow box pieces. Baby announcements and pressed flowers can go into the same display.

Small objects like these are easy to lose. A shadow box keeps them together and protected.

Heirlooms, Textiles and Collections

Vintage jewelry, antique textiles, cherished letters, seashells from a trip, travel patches, maps, postcards, badges, wedding invitations, pressed flowers. If it's dimensional and it matters, it can be framed.

Mixed-media collections, where several small objects are arranged as one composition, are worth talking through in person. Every project starts with a conversation.

How We Build a Shadow Box

Chosen around your object, not the other way around. Deeper boxes allow for bulkier items and layered arrangements.

Secure mounting keeps items in place without adhesives that can harm surfaces.

Layered mats or spacers create visual depth. Backing fabrics in felt, linen or suede add texture and contrast behind the piece.

Acid-free mats prevent yellowing and degradation. We stock Alpha Cellulose and Cotton Rag matboard for work that needs to last.

Specialty options such as UV-protective or non-glare glazing protect the contents. Conservation glass blocks harmful UV rays. Museum glass gives up to 99% UV filtration with maximum clarity and almost no reflection. For a large or heavy box, plexiglass and acrylic are shatter-proof and lightweight.

Small LED lights or picture lights draw focus without generating heat.

Which Framing Level Your Shadow Box Needs

We follow the five recognized levels of framing. Where your piece lands depends on what it is and how long it needs to survive.

  • Museum. The ultimate level of protection from physical damage, airborne pollution and acids generated by framing materials, for up to 35 years in normal conditions.
  • Conservation. A high level of the same protection, for approximately 20 years.
  • Commended. A moderate level of protection from airborne pollution and acid damage for around five years.
  • Budget and Minimum. Visually acceptable framing at a lower price, with no pretense of protecting the contents long term.

Bring your piece in and we'll recommend a level for it.

Depth. A standard box frame holds flat artwork against the glass. A shadow box builds space between the glass and the backing so a three-dimensional object can sit inside without being pressed. That gap is created with spacers or layered mats and sized to the object.

There's no set price. Cost depends on the size of the box, the depth required, the mats and backing you choose, and the glazing. Design consultation is free, and we give you an exact quote before starting. First-time customers get 15% off.

Absolutely. Shadowbox framing is one of our specialties. Jerseys, medals, uniforms, records, baby shoes, heirlooms and mixed collections all work, given the right depth and mounting.

On average, we take 10 full business days to complete a custom piece. If you're working to a date, tell us when you come in.

A store-bought box has a fixed depth and a fixed opening, so your object has to fit it. Ours is built the other way round. Made to order, around the object, with acid-free materials and UV-protective glazing so the contents don't yellow or fade. There are plenty of places to buy a box. If you want it done right, come see us.

Yes. Acid-free mats prevent yellowing and degradation, and UV-blocking glass or acrylic protects against fading. We'll recommend a level of protection based on what you're framing.
